My Attempt At Formality

So I was very leary of doing my mom's cake for her 50th birthday because I couldn't think of anything whimsical to do, so it had to be elegant. Elegant is not my forte... I'm more into fun and quirky, but here goes nothing right?!
Well here's the picture of how it turned out...not to shabby, right? It really ended up looking more like a wedding cake, but then again, how do you do elegant and not make it look like a wedding cake? So the cake was an almond cake with sweetened condensed cream in the middle layer and cream cheese icing...so rich, so tasty! It was covered white fondant. I decorated it with a fondant sash and roses and a calla lily made from gumpaste. These were my first attempt at making roses and I think they came out really nicely! My mom loved the look and taste of the cake, though she kept insisting it was too fancy for her! Silly mom....she looks great for 50, huh? ;)
