Mermaids and Spider Man Oh-My!

Well June/July were very busy times for me. It seems everyone's birthday is during those months and then again I have a business to run...and be a full time mom and wife. But they were fun and turned out cute I hope. The first one here is a mermaid cake made for my niece...
This is the picture of it before I finished putting in the front fondant "rock" to cover the support pipe for her tail. It was an 8" white cake with cream cheese frosting covered in "Satin Ice" fondant (which is my new favorite). The two rocks she is seated on are actually cupcakes covered in fondant. I also bought some new paint for my airbrush gun and I LOVE how easy it is to work with, nice constant colors...pretty blue. Here's a picture of the birthday girl with the finished cake.

Then it was onto my Venom/Spider-man cake for my nephew. This one was a many steps complicated cake. First off Venom was made with a Rice Krispy treats mold, much stronger and easy to shape when still warm. Getting the right shape for the head was very hard, and I still wasn't wholly satisfied, but it turned out okay once the accents were in place.

Then it was on to spidey. For the actual spider man, I broke down and bought a plastic figurine, it looked good and saved time. I did make a 4 tier building cake though (all layers were slightly different flavors of white  cake: rum, almond, etc.). Then the hard part were the walls. The were made of fondant sheets pressed with a brick pattern. I think I should have used gumpaste though, because they didn't hold up as much as I would have wanted. They did spray paint beautifully though. Here the finished product, let me know what you think!
Oh and the kids' favorite part was eating the teeth off of Venom! Go figure!
