This is the spread for Ethan's 1st birthday party. It was a circus theme so I decided to go with blue, red, and yellow as the color theme. I made some chocolate clown cupcakes, most of which survived the transport to the park. I also made a pound cake elephant covered in fondant with gum paste ears and trunk and a white "rainbow" ball cake for him to balance on. I didn't set the elephant on top until the party itself because I was afraid it wouldn't stay very long, but once it was all said and done, it balanced beautifully. Here are some other pictures leading up to the finished product.
This is the batter for the ball cake which was a "rainbow cake" inside. I made my white cake batter and then split it into 5 mixing bowls as you can see. Then you pour each color (in order of the rainbow ROYGBIV) into one side of the ball pan. I did 5 tbp of each color and that may have been a bit too much for this small pan. Then do the reverse order for the other side.
Here's a lid I cut off the top of one side of the cake, it was also really neat on the cross section as slices.
Then it was on to the elephant. It took two tries to get the shape right and make the gum paste accessories. Afterwards it was covered in fondant and airbrushed with my own "special" dyes.
And here is the finished product. One little circus elephant, practicing his balance on his little blue ball. I hope you enjoy!
