Mustang GT 5.0 Cake

So here's the latest cake. This is a replica of my husband's beloved race car. It is a 1986 Mustang GT convertible. It has been through thick and thin, so this was definitely going to be my husband's 30th birthday cake. It was a vanilla pound cake on top, devil's food on bottom with a dulce de leche filling and chocolate icing. Fondat on top of course with fondant and gum paste accessories. Now getting the color right was actually the hardest part. Neither my compressor air gun set up nor the spray can of food safe spray would get it black. So I ended up doing some gel food color diluted in Vodka to hand paint the thing. I have to say, it finally turned out the color it was supposed to be. Hope you guys enjoy!

Here's a picture with the windshield on....I actually think it looked better without.
And here's the happy birthday boy.

Circus Elephant Cake!

This is the spread for Ethan's 1st birthday party. It was a circus theme so I decided to go with blue, red, and yellow as the color theme. I made some chocolate clown cupcakes, most of which survived the transport to the park. I also made a pound cake elephant covered in fondant with gum paste ears and trunk and a white "rainbow" ball cake for him to balance on. I didn't set the elephant on top until the party itself because I was afraid it wouldn't stay very long, but once it was all said and done, it balanced beautifully. Here are some other pictures leading up to the finished product.

This is the batter for the ball cake which was a "rainbow cake" inside. I made my white cake batter and then split it into 5 mixing bowls as you can see. Then you pour each color (in order of the rainbow ROYGBIV) into one side of the ball pan. I did 5 tbp of each color and that may have been a bit too much for this small pan. Then do the reverse order for the other side.

Here's a lid I cut off the top of one side of the cake, it was also really neat on the cross section as slices.

Then it was on to the elephant. It took two tries to get the shape right and make the gum paste accessories. Afterwards it was covered in fondant and airbrushed with my own "special" dyes.

And here is the finished product. One little circus elephant, practicing his balance on his little blue ball. I hope you enjoy!

James Coney Island Hot Dog Cake

So every year for my husband's birthday, we go to James Coney Island. I don't know why, it's a tradition that started with his childhood I suppose. Well 2 years ago this was a cake I made. As you can see the left is a large hot dog, fashioned out of pound cake and twinkies, covered in fondant. This is sitting upon a 10" round white cake. I made the James Coney Island man out of fondant. I think I used all my red food coloring to make him red.
Unfortunately I did a rush job on the coney man so he doesn't look too good, but all in all the staff and James Coney thought it was the best thing they'd every experienced. I hope you enjoy!

Awesome Rainbow Cake

I'm working on ideas for my son's 1st birthday cake. It's going to be a circus theme so I'm hoping to incorporate this idea into the cake. Kudos to whoever thought of it first! Beautiful pictures and great blog! http://www.omnomicon.com/rainbowcake

My First Cake Ever

This was the first "extreme" cake I ever tried and I have to say I'm pretty proud of it. This is my husband's dream car which I made for his birthday. It's a "replica" of a 1966 AC Shelby Cobra. I shaped the cake out of pound cake and covered it with fondant. I used chocolate covered donuts for the wheels and foil for accents. Let me know what you think!

Zoo Cake

This is the latest cake I've made for my daughter's 2nd birthday at the zoo. I went with a hippo for the "main" cake, made out of vanilla and chocolate with cream cheese frosting and marshmallow fondant. The zebra cake for the birthday girl was zebra patterned on the inside (though I didn't take a picture). I wanted something a little more girly for her, so that was the compromise. Your comments are always welcomed!
